The first time I desperately wanted to plead the crafter's fifth, when my husband looked at me and said, if you can make a pillow, you can make a fitted domed circus tent.
Or was the case when my husband asked me to make custom sails for not 1 but 2 of his English pond boats.
Then, there was the chair I dragged home from Goodwill. The chair that cost me only $3.99. The chair I fell immediately in love with.
The chair that my husband snubbed. Oh, I should have pleaded the crafter's fifth on that one as well.
When my husband saw how I transformed that beautiful chair, a few weeks later, he proudly showed off his latest treasures picked from the streets...for free!
What I didn't see coming, though looking back probably should have, was the request for me to make custom cushions for these chairs.
2 cushions down, 2 more to go.
The chair looks so great in that fabric, Amy! Once word of your talent gets out people know to come to you. I think it's too late for pleading the Crafter's fifth..lol.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the chairs!! All of them. You are so very talented.
ReplyDeleteThey look fantastic, I'd take away that right if I wanted cushions! I have to do new ones for mine, I'd buy them but theyre a bit pricey I wish you were closer to "give" advise...and I mean baby me through the steps!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! Sorry your talent is bursting out and can't be hidden, you probably could claim fatigue-though? Looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHa! Thanks. Next time pleading the 5th doesn't work, I'm claiming fatigue for sure!
DeleteI think it's WONDERFUL that your husband supports your OBVIOUS talents. I mean, that circus tent is straight out of a kid's party rental catalogue and those sails look perfect for the boat. The cushions must be challenging, but the new fabric and piping detail are just Pier 1 worthy. Of course, when he asks you to reupholster the leather interior of his Mustang, then you should plead the 5th ;) (not that I know if he has or wants a Mustang).
ReplyDeleteWhat are you saying? They are coming out gorgeous!! And that piping! (FYI, I'm not too good at understanding what pleading the fifth means... so I hope I interpreted that right) Your husband is pretty awesome for bringing home all these free goodies! Can I borrow him?? hehe
ReplyDeletekeep sewing! sometimes i think we are our own worst critics, but everything you've produced so far has been quite lovely. and there's no need to plead the fifth...just think of all the pretty little things just waiting to be made that could not be realized if you did not lend your skilllllz!! ps>>your husband ROCKS for hauling home some street finds! x
ReplyDeleteI have trouble with sewing anything more than a straight line. It's not that I can't do it--it's just that I normally get impatient and do something wrong that frustrates the daylights out of me and then I want to quit! :) Your work is gorgeous, though!
ReplyDeletehaha! I plead the 5th when my husband asks, "What are you doing now?" As I've started yet another project that is covering the whole house and there's no dinner in sight. :)
ReplyDeleteOh that is hilarious! Hilarious mostly because I can relate :)
DeleteUmmmm... WOW! Those cushions look amazing! I love the piping! You are such a great seamstress, Amy. I can't believe it!
ReplyDeleteI know that you said that these cushions were a royal pain in the butt (figuratively, of course), but I would love to have half of your skill.
I haven't asked you yet, but what kind of sewing machine do you have? I'm researching ones for me to aspire to. Is yours fancy? :)
(p.s. The circus tent? You win. You're rad-tastic, lady.)
What great stuff! Did you do a tutorial on the first chair? I have a special chair that needs reupholstering, as well as refinishing the wood... and I am scared!!!
ReplyDeleteI was scared too! Thank goodness my chair was only $4, it made it much less intimidating. I shared some of the lessons I learned from that project (http://whilewearingheels.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-big-reveal-goodwill-chair.html). Best of luck!
Deletethat's funny! But remember you are halfway on those cushions...good job!
ReplyDeleteWhoa I love how those cushions turned out! Looks so professional, Amy. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy. I could have used some of your sewing skills :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! The cushions look amazing against the wood.
ReplyDeleteNow I've had the pleasure of seeing your sewing skills up close and personal and I know you have the ability to make those cushions....and boy did you! I love them! Fantastic! Great choice of fabric.
ReplyDeleteYou are doing an amazing job. Not sure I'd be brave enough to tackle that
ReplyDeleteThanks Erin! With your sewing skills, I am sure you could handle this.
DeleteWow! Great job, Amy. I love the boats, they are so cool!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carla, we got both boats at flea markets. They both needed some work, mostly new sails, so we got them both for great deals, about $30 a piece. Of course, the frustration that came with making the sales cost me a few headaches :)
DeleteOh. My. Gosh. Insane. Amazing. You can do anything. I swear.
ReplyDeleteI seriously struggle with box cushions. Seems like it should be so simple but somehow I can never get the bottoms to line up ... lots of ripping out of seems and do overs!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with yours!
:) Linda
The Crafter's 5th! I love it!! You really can do anything though! I love your new cushions Amy! You know you've just opened the door for your guy to bring home more stuff right?!!
ReplyDeleteThose are words my family would never utter to me... "if you can make a pillow". But really....your husband had every right to "think you can".
ReplyDeleteBliss
Oh my word! The sneak peak is wonderful! I've got some redo's I'm going to stick in the mail to ya, k? LOL!
ReplyDeleteSend them my way :)
DeleteI haven't the patience or the courage to try box cushions yet. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAmy - You are so insanely talented (do you ever get tired of hearing that...wink, wink). Loving the cushions. Good thing I don't live near you, I'd be dragging finds to your house all day long.
ReplyDeleteNIce!!! If you don't mind me asking... approximately how much did it cost to recushion the one chair? (cost of fabric, foam, etc..) I have an old chair that needs to be recushioned also- except I don't love the chair and am debating between replacing and repairing. Your cost estimate would be helpful in my decision :)
ReplyDeleteyou. are. ah-mazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteenough said.
