Put a Pin In It: Ironing Mat

One of the keys to living in a small house is to maximize your space.

SO, when I saw a quilted ironing mat that fits over your dryer, from Solutions, I knew I needed one.

Cue email to my mom, asking her if she could make me one.

She gathered the following supplies:

1 1/4 yards of Therma-Flec Heat Resistant Cloth, which is approximately $9.00 a yard
1 yard of Insul-Bright {which is what oven mitts or pot holders are insulated with}, which is approximately $4 a yard
6 strong magnets
Binding

She cut out the Insul-Bright and Therma Flec Heat Resistant Cloth to make a 21 inches wide by 33 inches long mat.

The mat was quilted using cross hatching, to hold the Insul-Bright into place.  Then she added a binding around the edges.

To make sure the mat remained in place even during vigorous ironing, she added 6 heavy duty super strong magnets to the edges.

To be honest, I rarely vigorously iron anything.  Now that I have my own ironing mat cover, I do iron more {mostly crafts} and now the top of my dryer stays clean {this used to be a favorite stacking spot of mine}.

  1. What a fantastic idea! It looks great on your dryer. I hardly ever iron either, but I have found I also need it more often for crafting. Headed to check out the tutorial now. :) Megan

  2. Thanks for the shout-out! I can tell you that the ironing mat I made gets used SOOOO MUCH. I leave it out all the time because it's pretty. And I'm like you, I'm a stacker... now the mat prevents that stack. Of course, there are other stacks, but we won't worry about those today.

    Nice job!

  4. I saw one of these on line (but hated the price). I thought it would be more difficult to make one on my own. Thanks for posting this!

  11. Cool Amy! So great how you found a way to work with your small space restrictions AND you had your Mom make it instead of buying one! 5 stars for sure!

  15. This is awesome. While we have a large house, our laundry room is quite small, so my husband (who does the ironing in the family) just irons on top of our washer but with a towel. Well, the towel isn't that great and we have a lovely burn mark on our washer as a result. I need to make this! Thanks for sharing.

  16. I don't like to iron, but when I do, I usually put a towel on the washer! This looks like it would work so much better.

  18. What a wonderful idea! I need one of these but unfortunately my dryer is in an unfinished basement/cellar and I hate going down there. So I definitely wouldn't go down there to iron, not that I iron that much unless it's wood veneer to edge plywood.

  19. Hmmm, if I ever get the top of my dryer cleared off..it's out in the garage and tends to collect things :)

  21. This is a great idea! I also use my dryer to stack stuff, and iron more for sewing/craft projects than my clothes. Thanks for sharing at Terrific Tuesdays.
