Embroidered USA Quilt - Part 1

I've decided to tackle another USA quilt

this time, instead of hand appliqueing each state, I want to embroider each state.

Interesting in joining me?

Find a map you like.  I found mine from Mr. Printable.  Import your map into Block Poster.  Block Posters allows you to enlarge an image to poster size and print it out.

Tape the pages together, so it maintains its form.

Lay at least a yard of fabric over the map and pin it into place so it won't move.

Using a water soluable pen, trace the outline of each state and the state's name onto your fabric

And, then start embroidering.

I used a stem stitch for the names of the states and the gray border outlining the outside of each states lines.  For the inside boarder of the states, I used a back stitch.

This is what I'll be doing during my spring break.  What about you?

  2. You had me at embroider :) So far, I've spent Spring Break housebound with strep throat infested children! This, by far, looks like more fun!

  10. Wow! That's very impressive! I've always wanted to embroider, but haven't ever given it a go. Also, thanks for the tips on Mr. Printable and Block Poster. I can see myself using both of those in the very near future!

  11. Amy - this is awesome! Are you going to add a heart on there for your hometown. You could embroider single states as well and sell them on Etsy, customizing them with a heart to mark the city where someone lives. Now I'm thinking up business plans for you ;-).

  16. What a fun idea for a quilt! I love your appliqued USA quilt, and an embroidered USA sounds like a wonderful project, too. Thanks for the tips on how to enlarge a design - I've never tried that, but that's so great to know and opens up a lot of creative quilting possibilities! I'll be pinning. ♥

  19. Hi!

When I clicked the word "map," I noticed several comments to that link regarding PDF and jpeg conversion difficulties, etc. Can you share further details regarding how you printed this after purchasing it from mrprintables?

    Thank you!
