Some nights go exactly as planned. Other nights...well, other nights, just as you are ready to sit down and enjoy the bliss of a quiet house, you let your dog out and she gets sprayed by a skunk.
If left to her own devices, Riley would have tried to deodorize herself by rolling around on the ground. Which, by the way, is not an effective method.
SO...Should you have the unfortunate experience of being on the receiving end of the spray from a skunk, you'll want to gather the following supplies.
Hopefully, if the time comes and you need to deodorize from a skunk spray, you'll already have these supplies. Of course, in our situation, we did not. An emergency trip to Walgreens was necessary, where the second hand skunk stink clinging to us was still bad enough to offend the sensitive nostrils of both the cashier and other customers. The looks you get, while trying to juggle several bottles of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, is almost worth the emergency trip to gather the supplies.
But back to the skunk deodorizer recipe.
In a bucket, mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and some dish soap until it forms a paste. Where some recipes require exact measurements, this one does not. Start with the entire box of baking soda and mix in hydrogen peroxide and some dish soap until you get a paste like substance.
Unless you want to smell like skunk, put on a pair of rubber gloves and then apply the paste liberally to your stinky dog.
Then, step back, because inevitably a stinky wet dog will shake.
Let the paste soak in for a few minutes and then rinse.
Repeat the paste and rinse two more times.
*This recipe is veterinarian approved. With a dog like Riley, who has encountered 2 skunks and defied death more than a cat has lives, having a father in-law that is a vet is PRICELESS.
Hopefully, this is one of those things you'll never need to know but will be glad you do just in case.
And, that's my two 'scents' worth on being sprayed by a skunk.
Oh my goodness...Riley is one tough cookie. Thanks for sharing this recipe. :)
ReplyDeleteMy sympathies to the whole family as well as the offended cashier.
ReplyDeleteI was waiting for this post ;) Poor Riley. Poor Riley's family!
ReplyDeleteRiley could have cared less. The humans, though, cared quite a bit. Skunk is the kind of thing you swear you can still smell for weeks, it gets stuck in your nose. I swear, I worry that the moms at pickup are inching away from me because they detect skunk stink :)
DeletePoor puppy! The look on her face in the pic. of her getting washed is too cute!
ReplyDeletePoor Riley! How does your dog not have her own show? HA! Still, you can't stay mad at that face!
ReplyDeleteThat face has saved her plenty. She's one of a kind, that's for sure!
DeleteOh yum! I love a good recipe!! :P
ReplyDelete-andi
Thanks for sharing the recipe. I've never had to deal with either of my dogs being sprayed but I will be prepared just in case.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't either :)
ReplyDeletePoor Riley, and how embarrassing to be out shopping with a dreadful stink , on the other hand how fantastic that your FIL is a vet and can help out with these sorts of remedies. I'm sure you all smell great now!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I know just how you feel. My car got sprayed several years ago. I took the kids to school not realizing it would "cling" to them. They called from school. Poor girls. I got the smell off them, but the car never recovered.
ReplyDeletePinned it...because I know I'll need it. Thanks Amy!
ReplyDeletePoor Riley! I can't wait to have a dog again one day. And that is such a blessing to have a FIL as a vet! The money I have spent over the years on vet bills is cRaZy!
ReplyDeleteRiley does not look amused in the scrubbing photo - priceless!
ReplyDeleteRiley was no amused. I was even less amused :)
DeleteThis is wonderful to have on hand! Pinning and hoping I don't have to use it lol!
ReplyDeleteoh my! one of our dogs got in a fight with a racoon, he killed that thing, but he stunk SO BAD...tha was about 5years ago. I am going to keep this in mind if that ever happens again
ReplyDeleteI love the photos. What a great story. Did Grace get to share it at school?
ReplyDeleteI should clarify...did Grace get to share the story at school, not the skunk smell. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHa :). She did not!
DeleteOhhhh!!! You didn't escape the shake of skunk smell paste? urggh. Hopefully you also got a rinse or two. :) Wish I could have watch from afar, your Walgreens trip. tehehe
ReplyDeleteHilarious. I mean, not for you, but I'm loving it. I wonder if this recipe would work for when my dumb mutt rolls in poop!
