Skunk Deodorizer Recipe

Some nights go exactly as planned.  Other nights...well, other nights, just as you are ready to sit down and enjoy the bliss of a quiet house, you let your dog out and she gets sprayed by a skunk.

If left to her own devices, Riley would have tried to deodorize herself by rolling around on the ground.  Which, by the way, is not an effective method.

SO...Should you have the unfortunate experience of being on the receiving end of the spray from a skunk, you'll want to gather the following supplies.

Hopefully, if the time comes and you need to deodorize from a skunk spray, you'll already have these supplies.  Of course, in our situation, we did not.  An emergency trip to Walgreens was necessary, where the second hand skunk stink clinging to us was still bad enough to offend the sensitive nostrils of both the cashier and other customers.  The looks you get, while trying to juggle several bottles of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, is almost worth the emergency trip to gather the supplies.

But back to the skunk deodorizer recipe.

In a bucket, mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and some dish soap until it forms a paste.  Where some recipes require exact measurements, this one does not.  Start with the entire box of baking soda and mix in hydrogen peroxide and some dish soap until you get a paste like substance.

Unless you want to smell like skunk, put on a pair of rubber gloves and then apply the paste liberally to your stinky dog.

Then, step back, because inevitably a stinky wet dog will shake.

Let the paste soak in for a few minutes and then rinse.

Repeat the paste and rinse two more times.

*This recipe is veterinarian approved.  With a dog like Riley, who has encountered 2 skunks and defied death more than a cat has lives, having a father in-law that is a vet is PRICELESS.

Hopefully, this is one of those things you'll never need to know but will be glad you do just in case.

And, that's my two 'scents' worth on being sprayed by a skunk.
