Design Your Own High Heels

I realize, this post is a little ironic and perhaps even perpetuates the notion that I actually wear high heels all the time.

Though, I do love to wear my heels, these days, Grace wears them more than I do, which is why I love Birdie's Big-Girl Shoes by SuJean Rim.

This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of, Birdie, a little girl desperate to wear her mom's high heels.  A plea I hear often from my own little Birdie.

Since this book is one of our favorites, we spent a day designing our own high heels.

I cut each shoe out of card stock.  Then, passed it along to the shoe designer.

Who applied glitter.

Or scribbles.

Or embellishments such as flowers and rhinestones.

Some of my favorites,

were water colored.

Grace has decided, she wants to grow up to be a shoe designer.

I just hope, if she does become a shoe designer,

she'll remember, I used to let her wear my shoes...

and hopefully she'll return the favor.

  1. She's the next Manolo Blahnik! Those are so cute. I think even my big girls would like doing that. Thanks for sharing :)

  2. What a fun idea!! I love all her designs...when does her line launch? lol

  3. These are wonderful! She's a lucky little girl to have a Mom who shares her time and creativity with her. Just charming!

  4. This is an adorable idea! I love the water colored one! You should frame each one (or your faves) in a girly frame and hang them up in her room. :)

  5. :) I love this post! That is a fun idea to do with your kids :) And I'm sure your little lady will remember and share her shoes!

  6. What a fun thing to do with your daughter:) I have to find that book because my little one LOVES wearing all my shoes...I think it is just adorable!

  7. And she will have such a momento of this precious time with her..you're a good MOMMIE

  13. Oh my gosh! This is sooo stinking adorable.. I just LOVE all the sweet ways your little lovey made heels! Wish this book was out when my girl was younger.. she would have loved it! Now we have the big girl books where you draw the whole outfit or the plates you can trace.. and of course her feet are ALMOST big enough that she can wear MY shoes.. by next year I may not own a SINGLE pair of heels! and wait.. you mean you DON'T actually wear heels ALL the time?

  14. Hi Amy,
    Thank you for posting these beautiful moments with your daughter. It does make me a little sad my three girls are all grown up, though. Very touching story, thank you, Di{CookTheTV}

  15. Wouldn't that be awesome Amy if she did become a shoe designer and sent you all her prototypes and lastest fashions? Love the watercolored ones that you two made! Looks like you had so much fun - great idea to keep her busy on a summer day!

  16. Oh that is one fabulous post! I loved reading it and I love that your beautiful girl wants to design her own heels. Do NOT tell me you don't wear your heels all of the time. You know I think you even have heels that match your sweats and pajamas! When my daughter was little, I bought her some heels at a garage sale and let her color and glue "jewels" on them. She wanted to wear them on her first day of school!

  17. This is the first time I hear about this book (Thank you so much- I;ll have to look it up) and absolutely love the new shoes you've designed!

  18. So cute! I remember wanting to wear my mom's shoes when I was little, but I bet it's just as fun to design your own! Thanks for sharing at The Fun In Functional!

  19. I will have to remember this idea for when my granddaughters come to visit. I especially love the glitter one!

  20. What a wonderful mom and me activity! I'm sure she'll remember this! Patsy from
