Embroidered Initials Felt Heart Pin

The weather isn't conducive to the romantic gesture of carving initials onto the trunk of a tree so I decided to make do with carving them onto a piece of a felt.  Of course, by carving, I mean embroidering.

First, I cut two pieces of hearts out of felt.  With embroidery thread and needle, I embroidered initials onto the front of the heart.  I sewed the front of the heart to the back of heart using a running stitch. Before I finished closing the heart completely, I stuffed it with some fiberfill.

Add a pin to the back of it and you have a romantic little brooch.

I think my handsome husband knows, he has the key to my heart initials carved into a tree trunk or not.

Embroidered Felt Heart Tutorial

What better way to tell someone they have your heart than by giving it to them?

These easy to make embroidered felt hearts can be personalized to suit your Valentine.

Whether you want to give them the key to your heart, a sweet sentiment of XOXO or Cupid's arrow, the possibilities are endless.

To make your own embroidered felt hearts:

Cut two hearts out of felt.  I used pinking shears to give the edges of my hearts more of a design flair.  Embellish the front of the heart with a design of your choice.  Embellish your design through embroidery or by adding buttons.

Secure the front of your heart to the back of your heart by doing a simple running stitch around the boarder.

Attach a pin to the back of your heart and it becomes a brooch.

Whether you get detailed in your embroidery...

or chose a simple design...

these embroidered felt hearts will have your Valentine mooning over them.

Heart Headband Or Pin Tutorial

Looking for a quick and easy Valentine's day project guaranteed to make your heart skip a beat?

Why not make this heart shaped headband...

That could also be used as a heart pin.

Simply gather the following supplies:  Scraps of chiffon or sheer fabric, double fold elastic {headband material}, a heart cut out of felt, scissors and a hot glue gun.

Cut approximately 30-40 circles, quarter sized, out of sheer fabric.  Fold each circle in half and with a dab of hot glue at the base, pinch it closed.  Place a dab of hot glue onto the felt heart and press your pinched closed sheer circles into it, working your way around the entire heart.

Decide if you'd want your heart to be used as a pin or a headband.

Attach a safety pin, if you prefer it in pin form.

Apply hot glue to the heart and attach it to the elastic, if you prefer it in headband form.

Before you decide what you'll do, make sure that you 'have your heart in the right place'.

Flower Brooch/Barrette Tutorial on a dime

Ah, pinterest, you did it to me again. I happened to 'pin' a beautiful flower brooch.

Lanvin brooch

Lanvin brooch (see more flower jewelry)

Gorgeous, right? How about for $335? Um, no. I am not sure about you but even if I had $335, I could NOT justify spending it on a flower brooch. I could, however, justify trying to make a similar brooch for drum roll please: $0.

$335 flower brooch compared to my $0 flower brooch, I would say equals a success.

To make one of your own, you will need: about a 1/4th of a yard of silk or polyester fabric, yard or hot glue (depending on how you want to affix your petals), a circle cut out of felt (about an inch and a half in diameter) and a tea light candle

Using an old scarf made of shiny polyester blend, I cut 6 larger 'petals' and 10 smaller 'petals' about 2 1/2 inches in length. They do not need to be perfect. *I cut more than I actually needed.

Using a tea light candle, sear the edges of the petals on the flame of the candle. This will stop your edges from fraying and gives the petal a more flower like edge.

*Please use caution.

When all petals have been seared, start to layer your petals on a circle of felt with about a 1 1/2 inch diameter to build some dimension to your flower. I used a needle and thread to secure the petals but you could easily use a hot glue gun.

This is what the back of your flower will begin to look like.

This is what the front of your flower will begin to look like.

Continuing layering your petals until you get a size you are happy with. My flower uses 3 layers (5 along the bottom, 6 in the middle and 4 on the top) with a total of 15 petals.

When all your layers are complete, use a 1/2 inch by 8 inch strip of matching fabric. Fold the strip of fabric in half and begin twisting and rolling the fabric to create something like this...

Attach your rolled fabric, with either glue or thread, to the center of your flower.

Then decide how to wear your flower. Attach either a barrette or a pin to the back and enjoy!

Taking self portraits highlighting a flower on the side of your head is hard. Most of my pictures turned out like this...
