I heart fake food - Felt Sugar Cookie Tutorial

Believe it or not, I still heart fake food.  And, sometimes, felt fruits and veggies just aren't enough.  I crave felt sugar too.

No fake kitchen is complete without a set of sugar cookies.  With this easy to follow tutorial, your little baker will have so much fun whipping up their own batch of felt sugar cookies.

Felt sugar cookies are also the perfect accompaniment for any tea party.

To make your own zero calorie sugar cookies, grab the following supplies:

To make the your cookie dough and cookie base:

Start by tracing your cookie cutter pattern onto the tan felt/cookie dough.  Trace along the outside of the cookie cutter.  Using a pair of sharp scissors, cut out your cookie shape.

*Optional.  Felt tends to stretch the more you use it.  To give the felt more durability, I layered another layer of tan felt beneath the layer I cut the cookie shapes out of.  I applied a little bit of glue around the shape outline and pressed it into place onto the solid piece of felt.  Sew around the perimeter of the dough.  Cut the shape out of the solid layer of felt, using the top layer as an outline.  These shapes were not kept intact as I cut them out.

**If you opt to add an extra layer to cookie dough, you may want to cut add a second layer to the cut out cookie shape so it will fit back inside of the dough evenly.

To make the icing.

Select the color icing you want to use.  Again, use the cookie cutter as the pattern, this time tracing from inside the cookie cutter.  Cut out enough to cover all your cookies.

Optional:  To embellish your cookies with 'sprinkles', using a needle and thread, sew beads onto the 'icing'.

If you have extra sprinkles, you can fill up an empty sprinkle container.

Glutton free, calorie free felt sugar cookies.

Package these homemade felt sugar cookies up with a rolling pin, measuring cups, measuring spoons, recipe cards and extra sprinkles and you have a great gift.

A gift that encourages imaginative play.

The inner baker is bound to come out in anyone who plays with these cookies.

Felt sugar cookies...

the perfect addition to any play kitchen.

Gift Card Holder Tutorial

'Tis the season of giving gift cards.

Every year, at least someone I am giving gifts to, has requested a gift card.  Sigh.  The impersonal exchange of a plastic gift card....Merry Christmas!

To make your gift cards a little more personal, grab the following supplies:  Fabric (this is a great stash buster), *optional snaps, Velcro or buttons and a rotary cutter or scissors.

Cut your fabric out.  To make a 2 pocket card holder cut both fabrics to the size of 11 1/2" by 5".  To make a 1 pocket card holder, cut both fabrics to the size 9 1/2" by 5".

Layer the 2 fabrics together, right sides facing each other.

Sew the two fabric sections together.  Sew 3 sides closed, leaving one of the shorter sides open.

Turn right side out.

Tuck in the raw edges of the open side.  It's always helpful to press or iron between steps.  Top stitch the open end closed.  *Optional, top stitch across the opposite finished side as well.

If making a 2 pocket card holder, fold your sewn rectangle in half and press.  Open the rectangle back up, fold each end in, to create a pocket on both sides.  Sew down the length of each long sides, sewing the sides of your pockets into place and creating a top stitch finishing touch as you go.

If making a single pocket card holder, fold over only one of the short sides.  Sew down the length of the rectangle, across the top of the non pocketed side and down the other side.

When completed, press or iron to give your card holders a finished look.

*Optional:  add a snap or Velcro to give your card holders a closing option.  Card holders can also be left without adding a closure.

**Creatively embellish your gift card holders.  Cut shapes out of felt or fabric and either glue onto your gift card holder or using fusible interfacing adhere your shape by ironing it into place.

The only thing left to do...buy a gift card.

Tuck it into your gift card holder.

And begin the season of gift card giving.

Butterfly Finger Puppet

Butterfly and nature lovers are sure to love this fun and easy craft.

Want to make some butterflies of your own?  Simply gather the following supplies:  green cardstock, a pencil, twigs, scissors, glue stick, flower petals (collect wildflowers, petals from your garden or, if you are lucky enough to have gotten a bouquet of flowers use those) and leaves.

First, arrange the leaves on green cardstock, in sort of a butterfly shape.  Trace around your leaves and cut your butterfly out of the cardstock.  Fold the butterfly in half.  Cut 2 lines into the center, creating a loop to place your finger inside.

Then, using a glue stick, generously apply glue to the leaves and firmly press onto the butterfly shape cutout.  *Optional:  Attach some twigs to the center of your butterfly.

Next...and this is where it gets fun, using flower petals, begin to decorate the butterfly's wings.  Again, secure them into place using your glue stick.  Grace used petals of some tulips we grew, wildflowers that popped up in our yard and rose petals (because this was one of those occasions I had received a bouquet of flowers).

Place your butterfly onto your finger...

and have fun making it flutter around.

So next time you are looking for a fun craft to do with the kids, try making one of these flower and leave butterflies.

Sadly, these butterflies don't last for long.  Make sure to enjoy them while you can.
