You Stole My Heart Valentine's

Though it may not be baseball season just yet, it is almost Valentine's day.   These 'you stole my heart' Valentine's are quick, easy and fun to make.

First, grab a pencil with a good eraser.  Trace a heart on the eraser.  Using an X-acto knife, remove the excess around the traced heart from your eraser.

Now that we have a heart stamp...

gather the following supplies:  an ink pad, mini stamps, heart shaped sucker, heart pencil stamp and white card stock cut out in circles.

Use the heart pencil stamp to create the stitches on the baseball and add 'you stole my heart' or some other cute baseball saying to the center and attach your sucker.

I think these Valentine's are a definite home run!

Pipecleaner Crown

Princesses are a very big deal in our house, at the moment. Grace lives in her very own fairy tale where her daddy is the Prince and Riley is the witch {poor Riley}. Grace, of course, has cast herself as a princess.

So what does every princess need besides for a fairy Godmother or two...

A crown, of course.

Using these tinsel pipe cleaners from Hobby Lobby, Grace and I crafted our {her} own crown.

I started by twisting 2 of the pipe cleaners together, making a halo shape, for the base of the crown.

Then, by twisting and bending the pipe cleaners, the crown started to take shape. I used 8 pipe cleaners, cutting some of them to fill in and give structure to the sides and middle of the crown.

The finishing touch...jewels.

Grace happily glued some pink and blue 'sapphires' to her crown.

I think it's a crown truly fit for a princess.

The fairy tale continues. Do you think by default I get cast as the evil queen?

Another Quilt

My mom, the queen of quilts, has recently started making baby clothes quilts.  Each square is created using a romper, onesie, baby doll dress or sailor suit that the sweet little trendsetter wore while accomplishing the firsts in life like rolling over, sitting up, crawling and walking.

So even when your innocent baby has grown to adventurous toddler a rebellious teenager or an adult you can still get wrapped up in the excitement of those first big steps in life by looking at this quilt.

My mom had offered to created one of this quilt time capsules for Grace but I had hesitated...until now. 

I pulled out totes that had stored these precious outfits away and I began to remember the milestones.

The firsts.

And, I began to realize, for the first time, how quickly time passes.

So, some of the outfits went back into the tote.  Outfits that I just couldn't imagine cutting up.  Outfits that will continue to be stored and saved.

Then there were outfits that were adorable, that made me smile, that I realized could make up a quilt that I would want to get wrapped up in the excitement of remembering.

Valentine's day 2012

I am, and continue to be, suffering from crafter's block.  Yes, writer's block for those who craft.  Sigh.  I am sure inspiration will strike soon BUT for now, I'll share some of my Valentine's inspired creations from last year.

This is ME

I have a confession to make.  I hate having my picture taken. 

I look over every picture of myself with a very critical eye.  It always seems to me, the person looking back at me in any picture, doesn't seem to match the person I see in the mirror, so all too often, any picture of me gets deleted.  

I have become quite skilled at avoiding being photographed.

Lately, I've come to realize, the images I am deleting are images, one day Grace might want to look back on.

In an attempt to embrace who I am and encourage others to do the same thing, I am issuing a challenge.  Join me in stepping in front of the camera.  Join me in trying to see who you are in an artistic way.  Join me in saying:  This is ME.

The rules are simple, you or a part of you must be in the photo, and you must have clicked that shutter yourself--with a timer, a cable release, wireless remote, however you do it as long as you do it yourself!

Each month there will be a theme to help inspire you.  The theme is optional, though, all self portraits are welcome.

The theme this month is 'Simple Moments'.  My simple moment, reading with Grace.

The last Friday of every month, there will be a link party you can join.  Linked entries must be to a blog post or flickr image {so non-bloggers can join as well} of your recent self-portraits. Your photo does not have to relate to the optional monthly theme, but it does need to be a self-portrait.

A self portrait is a picture that is 1. taken by you and 2. has part of you in the picture, it can be your face, your hands, your toe, as long as you are in the picture in some form it counts as a self portrait. 

So, get in front of the camera, get inspired and see yourself in a new light.

When one door closes.

Who knew...two years ago, a door would close in my life and I would lose my job. 

Who knew...8 months later, I would started a blog called While Wearing Heels and that in the process, I would discover this creative and artistic side of myself I never knew existed.

Who knew...Mary Janes Farm would discover, on pinterest, the United States Quilt I made.

Who knew...they would then ask if it could be featured in their January/February issue.

Who knew...that the philosophy I have lived by since that unforeseen door closed, the philosophy that saved me would become an inspiring quote in a magazine.

Who knew?   Not me.

It just goes to show, when one door closes it doesn't mean your story ends, it just means you have to figure out what your next chapter will be.

There is no telling where life will take you.
