Garden Party - The Big Reveal

I've kept you in suspense long enough, doling out details here and there.  Your patience, sweet readers, is about to pay off, today I'll share the all the details for Grace's garden party.

To be honest, though, our garden party theme was stretched to suit whatever I came up with that had anything flower or garden related.

I like to set the tone for my parties as soon as you walk up to our house.  This year, our front porch steps read:  6 and sweet as can bee.

6, well, because this sweet little girl of mine in what seems like a blink of an eye has turned 6.

And, this little lady, is truly sweet as can bee.  *This is where you have to agree to go along with the liberties I took in stretching our garden theme to now include bees.

Decorations included pom pom bees {inspired by bloesem kids}.  I mean, these bees were so cute, I could have done an entire bee themed party.

Since we all known bees need to pollinate and to bring us back to the garden party theme, decorations also included flowers, both real...

and in tissue paper form.

The Goodwill desk we bought, last year, for Grace's bunny themed birthday party, was used again to hold snacks for the party.  And, our salvaged {aka found on the side of the road} window, was used as a backdrop.

Flowers and greenery nestled among the goldfish.

Popcorn in individual cups, set upon a rustic wood block, next to a beautiful 'Do you suppose she's a wildflower' print.

I was also able to reuse the moss covered letters from Grace's bunny themed party.  With the addition of some flowers and bees, it transitioned well from bunny party to garden party.

The backyard was set to accommodate 14 little girls.

The chairs were decorated with more tissue paper flowers {and if you are starting to wonder how many tissue paper flowers I made...I made too many!}.

The tables were covered in vintage fabrics found at a local flea market and fresh flowers.

There were also stations set up outside for games and imaginative play.

Pin the flower in Grace's hair proved to be a party favorite...

Along with the flower themed punch box.

Homemade vintage aprons were tucked inside each flower.

So, each guest went home with a garden party favor bag filled with an apron, a packet of seeds, a flower pot and a flower ring pop.

In addition to games, the girls were also encouraged to use their imaginations and run a flower shoppe or a farmer's market.

There was also a garden station...

including a no dirt garden

Our party guests were encouraged to wear tissue paper flower hats.

Once corralled, we plied the 14 girls with dirt.  Choruses of 'ews' and 'yucks' were heard until their first bites and then, it was blissfully quiet.

Worried about sending these little girls on a sugar high, instead of cake, we served a watermelon cake.

Watermelon, cut into a cake shape and iced.

In the end, 14 little girls came to a garden party.

And, 1 little girl turned 6 in the sweetest way possible.

Merry Christmas Banner

Because Christmas is just a little more special with handmade decorations, I decided to make a merry and bright Christmas banner...out of felt.  Christmas and felt.  There isn't anything much better than that.

This inexpensive handmade Merry Christmas garland can be customized with the colors you select and/or the holiday saying you want to create.

So, go grab some felt and let's get start.  I opted to go bright and cheery as opposed to traditional.  Make this garland your own and select colors that make you happy.

Using a water soluble pen, trace your letters.  Each letter will be layered so you'll need to cut out 2 of every letter.

Using a running stitch (or a sewing machine, to save yourself time), sew around each letter.  Leave roughly 1/2 an inch unsewn on each side of your letter.

By leaving this section of every letter unsewn, you will be able to string twine or ribbon through it and adjust your letters later, based on where you decide to hang it.

Finish stringing your letters...

Find a place to display...

And, enjoy!

Merry Christmas!

Paper Star Garland

Paper Star Garland a quick and subtle decoration for the 4th of July or Christmas {it's never too early to think about Christmas, right?}.

To make a garland of stars, gather the following supplies:  stars cut from white cardstock, thread and a sewing machine.

I thread my bobbin with red thread and used blue on the spool, to give my white stars a patriot feel.  Push the stars through your sewing machine, one at a time, until you have the length of garland you want.

When you've finished, hang it up and admire.

Felt Hearts Headband & Garland

My love affair with felt continues.  This time, instead of being in the form of fake food, it's in the form of hearts.

Heart head bands first and heart garland to follow.

To make a heart head band, grab a few felt hearts and some fold over elastic.

Then line the hearts up on top of the fold over elastic

Sewing

Sew the ends of the fold over elastic together and you have a quick and easy Valentine's day accessory.

With the rest of my hearts, I made 'the easiest heart garland' from Made by Rae

And easy is an understatement.  This is the perfect sewing project for first time sewers.  You don't even need to make sure your lines are straight, as long as they connect one heart to the other, you've succeeded.

Heart head band and heart garland...though, if you ask Grace, she'll tell you the garland is her beautiful scarf.

DIY Silhouette

Ok, so I have succumb to the silhouette craze. I've been seeing it every where so I figured, why not give it a try.

My muse...

I pulled Riley's picture into my Silhouette program, traced her out and had my Silhouette do the rest of the work for me {you could do this in Photoshop OR print your image out on paper, cut it out and then trace it on black paper}. I decided I liked the look of the reverse silhouette, so I kept her outline.

This was the hardest part. I am a book lover by nature. Though I have succumb to the silhouette craze, I have not fallen into the Kindle or Nook craze. So, when I decided to use a dictionary page for Riley's body, I had to fight through everything in my nature to actually cut a page out of a book.

Any guesses what page I used?

And there it is proudly on display with her first dog collar and Marley and Me {which if you've read any of my previous Riley posts, you'll understand how fitting that is}.
