I heart fake food - Felt Sugar Cookie Tutorial

Believe it or not, I still heart fake food.  And, sometimes, felt fruits and veggies just aren't enough.  I crave felt sugar too.

No fake kitchen is complete without a set of sugar cookies.  With this easy to follow tutorial, your little baker will have so much fun whipping up their own batch of felt sugar cookies.

Felt sugar cookies are also the perfect accompaniment for any tea party.

To make your own zero calorie sugar cookies, grab the following supplies:

To make the your cookie dough and cookie base:

Start by tracing your cookie cutter pattern onto the tan felt/cookie dough.  Trace along the outside of the cookie cutter.  Using a pair of sharp scissors, cut out your cookie shape.

*Optional.  Felt tends to stretch the more you use it.  To give the felt more durability, I layered another layer of tan felt beneath the layer I cut the cookie shapes out of.  I applied a little bit of glue around the shape outline and pressed it into place onto the solid piece of felt.  Sew around the perimeter of the dough.  Cut the shape out of the solid layer of felt, using the top layer as an outline.  These shapes were not kept intact as I cut them out.

**If you opt to add an extra layer to cookie dough, you may want to cut add a second layer to the cut out cookie shape so it will fit back inside of the dough evenly.

To make the icing.

Select the color icing you want to use.  Again, use the cookie cutter as the pattern, this time tracing from inside the cookie cutter.  Cut out enough to cover all your cookies.

Optional:  To embellish your cookies with 'sprinkles', using a needle and thread, sew beads onto the 'icing'.

If you have extra sprinkles, you can fill up an empty sprinkle container.

Glutton free, calorie free felt sugar cookies.

Package these homemade felt sugar cookies up with a rolling pin, measuring cups, measuring spoons, recipe cards and extra sprinkles and you have a great gift.

A gift that encourages imaginative play.

The inner baker is bound to come out in anyone who plays with these cookies.

Felt sugar cookies...

the perfect addition to any play kitchen.

I Heart Fake Food - Felt Apple Tutorial

Gather the following Supplies:
Red, green and brown felt
Fiberfill
Scissors
Needle and thread {green, red and brown}
Sewing machine
Glue

Using the pattern below {copy and paste it into word to enlarge, the apple body is approximately 3 1/2 inches long}.

Cut the apple pieces out of felt.

Starting with two of the four pieces, begin sewing one side together starting a 1/4 of an inch down from the top. Continue until all 4 of your pieces have been sewn together. When all 4 sides are sewn together, you may want to sew across the bottom, to make sure your seams are sewn shut.

Turn the apple right side out.

Generously stuff the apple with fiberfill. No need to worry, I am not running a 'I heart fake food' sweat shop. The assistance I got was short lived.

I rarely change the color of thread on my sewing machine so occasionally you'll notice some exposed seams. Using your needle and thread, you can do a few stitches to close up any exposed seams. This will only take a minute or two at most. While closing up any exposed seams, begin to close in the opening as well {do not close it completely, you need a small opening to insert the stem and leaf}.

To create your stem, tightly roll up the brown rectangle piece of felt you cut. With your needle and brown thread, sew the stem shut. *Optional: with your needle and green thread, embroider veins onto your green leaf.

Insert the stem and green leaf in the opening left in your apple. Using your needle and red thread, sew the opening of your apple completely shut, sewing the stem and leaf in as you go.

I am all about finishing touches, I'd like for the bottom of my apple to look as good as the top. If you feel the same, cut a small circle out of brown felt {the same color you used for the stem}, apply a dab of glue where the seams meet and cover with the brown circle of felt.

Ta da...

How do you like them apples?

I Heart Fake Food - Sunny Side Up Eggs

Supplies:
White and Yellow Felt
White and Yellow Thread OR Fabric Glue
Egg Carton
Easter Eggs

Enlarging the pattern below {or making your own}

cut 2 pieces of the egg white out of white felt and 1 circle of yellow felt for the yolk.

Using a whip stitch, sew the yolk to one layer of egg.

When your yolk is secure, again, using a whip stitch, attach the remaining layer of egg to the back of the egg.

*Instead of sewing, you could easily use fabric glue to save some time.

Save an egg carton from your recycle bin.  Grab some Easter eggs...

and fill with your sunny side up eggs.

Don't all eggs open with perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs inside?

In the paraphrased words of Porky Pig, "Th-Th-Th-Th-Th-... That's all, yolks."

Santa's Beard 'Ho Ho Ho' How To

While looking through the current J Crew catalog, I noticed this adorable little boy with the cutest Santa beard {which they are not selling, neither the boy nor the beard}.

I was inspired. So I decided to make my own.

Want to make one too?

Well, go grab the following supplies:
White Felt or fleece {I used fleece}
Elastic
You'll need your sewing machine and you may need to hand sew a bit.

Using this pattern or make one of your own...

Cut out the mustache and beard. For each {the mustache and the beard} you'll need to cut 2 parts for each pattern piece.

Sew your mustache together. I decided to hide my stitches on the mustache so I sewed around the mustache leaving a 1/4 of an inch seam allowance.

I also left an opening so I could turn my mustache right side out.

With the beard, I let my stitches show, so I sewed around the entire beard as close to the edges as possible, leaving no openings.

Hand sew the mustache to your beard.  Sew it into place stitching the bottom of the mustache to the top points of the beard.

Measure and cut your elastic to fit around your Santa to be's head.  Hand sew the ends of the elastic approximately in the middle of each mustache, from the back.  Check how it would fit and where to place it before securely attaching it.

Then find a Santa that wants to show it off.

Now I just need to find a Santa hat.
