Embroidered Felt Heart Tutorial

What better way to tell someone they have your heart than by giving it to them?

These easy to make embroidered felt hearts can be personalized to suit your Valentine.

Whether you want to give them the key to your heart, a sweet sentiment of XOXO or Cupid's arrow, the possibilities are endless.

To make your own embroidered felt hearts:

Cut two hearts out of felt.  I used pinking shears to give the edges of my hearts more of a design flair.  Embellish the front of the heart with a design of your choice.  Embellish your design through embroidery or by adding buttons.

Secure the front of your heart to the back of your heart by doing a simple running stitch around the boarder.

Attach a pin to the back of your heart and it becomes a brooch.

Whether you get detailed in your embroidery...

or chose a simple design...

these embroidered felt hearts will have your Valentine mooning over them.

Mason Jar Fairy House

Grace was recently invited to a fairy themed birthday where she got to create a fairy house our of a mason jar. 

AND...it was so adorable, I had to share.

To make your own fairy house, find a mason jar.

Fill your jar with things like moss, feathers, jewels and little trinkets. 

Feel free to decorate the jar with nature themed stickers.

Add some ribbons, flowers and, if you want, a personalized name tag.  This felt tag was embroidered but you could always attach a paper tag if you'd prefer.

When your jar is done, wait for the fairies to arrive.

Butterfly Finger Puppet

Butterfly and nature lovers are sure to love this fun and easy craft. 

Want to make some butterflies of your own?  Simply gather the following supplies:  green cardstock, a pencil, twigs, scissors, glue stick, flower petals (collect wildflowers, petals from your garden or, if you are lucky enough to have gotten a bouquet of flowers use those) and leaves. 

First, arrange the leaves on green cardstock, in sort of a butterfly shape.  Trace around your leaves and cut your butterfly out of the cardstock.  Fold the butterfly in half.  Cut 2 lines into the center, creating a loop to place your finger inside.

Then, using a glue stick, generously apply glue to the leaves and firmly press onto the butterfly shape cutout.  *Optional:  Attach some twigs to the center of your butterfly.

Next...and this is where it gets fun, using flower petals, begin to decorate the butterfly's wings.  Again, secure them into place using your glue stick.  Grace used petals of some tulips we grew, wildflowers that popped up in our yard and rose petals (because this was one of those occasions I had received a bouquet of flowers).

Place your butterfly onto your finger...

and have fun making it flutter around.

So next time you are looking for a fun craft to do with the kids, try making one of these flower and leave butterflies.

Sadly, these butterflies don't last for long.  Make sure to enjoy them while you can.

I heart fake food - Pineapple Tutorial

A farmer's market just isn't complete without a pineapple or two.  How else would you make a felt piña colada, right?

If you heart fake food and want to learn how to make your own felt pineapple, keep on reading.

You'll need to gather the following supplies:  felt in green, gold and brown, needle and brown thread, a ruler, water erasable pen, scissors and fiberfill.

Using an entire sheet of gold fabric, draw a grid pattern with your ruler and water erasable pen.  The grid does not need to extend all the way to the bottom of the felt.  Leave approximately an inch, at the bottom of the felt, grid free.

Either using your sewing machine OR hand embroidering use brown thread to cover the grid you just drew.
*I opted to hand embroider using a stem stitch.

Fold the pineapple body in half, right side facing each other, and sew down the long side ending at the inch mark that is grid free.

Along the grid free bottom inch section of your pineapple, cut 4 long thin triangle sections out.  You'll need to make these cuts in order to fold the bottom sections over to close the pineapple. 

Fold the bottom sections of the pineapple over.  Either glue or hand sew the opening closed.   You may need to adjust your cuts to get the fold to lay flat.  *If you get your cuts right, you could also attempt to sew the cuts back together to close the bottom of the pineapple.

To give the bottom of your pineapple a more finished look (and to hide any gaps or puckers), cut out a small circle out of brown felt.  Apply some glue to the bottom center of the pineapple and affix the brown circle into place. 

Generously stuff your pineapple with fiberfill until you are about an inch from the top.

To create the stem of your pineapple, grab the green felt.  Cut sections of felt with either 2, 3 or 4 points (it will resemble the shape of grass).  Start with your section of 2 points and pinch them together.  Wrap your section of 3 points around the center 2 points.  Using your needle and thread (I used green thread), do a few stitches by hand to secure to stem pieces into place.  With each new section of green felt, start slightly lower than the section before.  You'll complete between 3 and 4 layers or sections before your stem is complete.

Cut small triangle shapes into the top of your pineapple, preferably not into any of the grid stitches you created.  Fold the tops over so and begin to hand stitch the top of your pineapple closed using yellow thread.  Do not close the top completely.

Insert the stem into the center of the pineapple and continue to stitch the top shut while stitching the stem into place. 

Done.

Hopefully you heart your new pineapple.

'The Force is Strong' with these ornaments

Luke, come to the Dark Side of the Christmas Tree.

What Star Wars fan wouldn't love their own Darth Vader or Boba Fett ornament, hand made by you?

To make this embroidered felt Darth Vader ornament...

Supplies:  black felt, white and black embroidery thread, needle and some ribbon

Directions:  Cut the helmet out of 2 pieces of black felt, using the pattern below. With white embroidery thread, begin to embroider Darth Vader's mask onto one piece of the black felt. When you have completed all the embroidery, do a simple running stitch, with black thread, to attach the back to the front and enclose a ribbon loop at the top.

Then add your ornament/gift tag to the top of a present. I, admittedly, am not familiar with Darth Vader but something tells me, he might not appreciate the ribbon accessory.

To make a Boba Fett felt ornament...

Supplies: green, orange, black and charcoal felt {I haven't ventured into expensive felts, I buy all my colors from Joann Fabrics}, some crafting glue, ribbon {for hanging}, some green, yellow and black embroidery thread and needle.

Directions:  Using the pattern above, cut all your pieces out of felt. I opted to embroider the eyes {in black} and the scratch marks {in yellow}.

Glue the mask pieces of felt onto the front of Boba Fett. The cream and black, for the antenna should be added to the back piece.  When you have completed your embroidery and your glue has dried, do a running stitch with your green thread to secure the back to the front and also enclose the ribbon loop.

These ornaments can also double as gift tags, simply embroider the name on the back of the ornament...

And give them to the Star Wars lovers in your life.

*Confession:  I've never even seen Star Wars before.  Shameful, I know...don't tell my nephews :)
