Fragile Hearts Made of Clay

A clay dough recipe for the fragile hearted.

The recipe, a cup of baking soda, 3/4 cup of water, 1/2 cup of corn starch.  Mix the ingredients in a sauce pan, over medium low heat, stirring until it's the consistency of mashed potatoes.  *For a more detailed tutorial, go check out The Woodside Kitchen.

When the dough has cooled, roll them out and have fun creating different shapes using cookie cutters.

Then, get creative making some imprints with rubber stamps.

Fragile hearts seemed poetic.

Bake the ornaments for roughly 1 hour at 175 degrees.  Once cooled, hang and decorate.

A wonderful reminder that the heart and love are both fragile and to be handled with care.

Though I love my fragile heart, to take a page from Mellywood's Mansion, I desperately wanted this to be a delight BUT the more my ornaments dried out, the more *fragile* they started to look.  Of the 13 ornaments I made, only 1 was worth saving.  All were cracked and some cracks even went clear through to the back of the ornament.

Help me turn this disaster into a delight...where did I go wrong?

  1. Amy, those are so cute! (Looks like you are fully out of your craft rut by the way.) I made some clay hearts last weekend, but I cheated and used Fimo Clay. I have never made my own clay, so I have no idea what went wrong, but in the words of the famous Mel...I'm calling this a delight! cracks and all!

  5. well, maybe they are cracking because you wrote "fragile" on it :) ...jk...but maybe has to do with the baking. Maybe too hot or too long...but that's just my guess. No expert here

  14. I think the cracks work with the fragile theme, they're very poetic. Before I saw the pictures on a bigger screen I thought maybe too thin, but seeing them now they look fine. I'm thinking the dough would be stronger if the ratio of baking soda to for cornstarch was swapped to 1 cup of cornstarch and 1/2 cup baking soda. I would have thought the flour would be what gave it its strength. I just looked at her tutorial and she says that not enough kneading will cause cracking, maybe it's a case of playing around with the kneading times, what's enough? I really don't know, but I'm sorry it didn't work out as planned. Thanks for the shout out by the way :)

  16. What wonderful and poetic hearts! I'm sorry they cracked. I made some hearts, too, and used a similar recipe but let mine air dry. I only had one heart that cracked and it curled a bit, too. I thought maybe I'd made it too thin. I didn't knead my dough because it seemed to dry too quickly. http://simplycreatinghome.com/cornstarch-dough-hearts/

Thanks for stopping by earlier and leaving such a sweet comment. Have a wonderful weekend!

  19. mine did the same when we did handprint santas last year for Christmas for the kids parents at cor's school. so we redid them making them thicker. they didnt crack in the centers but you could still feel them like they weren't baked all the way thru which i worried about mold. i told the other room mom that i would spring for clay next time (u can get a big brick of terra cotta or white colored sculpey clay at michaels for $13 and with a 40% off coupon would make it less than $8 it goes a long way!!)
